Thursday Threads - Windy In The City

It's been forever since I've posted an outfit series on the blog! Like before I even moved.. since the summer! There are several reasons for this.. first is I've stopped all collaborations with fast fashion companies. You know... the companies that just keep pumping out clothing..  clothing that falls apart within 3 months because it is not made to last.. it's made to be there for a season. These are the same companies that utilize slave labor, with poor or even fatal working conditions. GMO cotton is used for the production of the clothing, and  harmful chemicals are in the dyes, which end up getting dumped into public water. And then the clothing is shipped, which is also harmful to the environment. You can read more about it here.
So, I decided against buying new clothing! Unless it's handmade, upcycled, recycled, thrifted, or a company I really know and support; I won't be making any purchases of new clothing.
I think you have all seen this shift in my outfits as I usually tag "thrifted" at the bottom.

I guess most outfit posts are about where someone gets the outfit, so others can recreate it by buying that same piece. That's not what my outfit photos are about. Instead I want to show the world how fashionable you can be without buying new clothing. I will admit, some of the thrifted clothing I get are products of fast fashion, but at least when it's bought second hand, it doesn't go into the pockets of greedy corporations. Most thrift stores even donate proceeds to shelters or those in need. So, it's a slightly better option.

All outfit details are thrifted.

P.S. Sterling recently asked me when I became such an activist.. (I've also decided to become plastic free..) I had no idea... It just happened. One day I woke up, shrugged to myself and said "turns out I'm an activist, feminist and environmentalist." I'm just a small person living on spaceship earth... but I do hope to make a difference.

Thursday Threads - Swept Up

I wish I could think of some beautiful poetic words to describe the feelings from this mini photo shoot we did... But my words are failing me today.

Driving to some of our favorite crystal shops, we passed by this wall.
It was actually so close to where I grew up.. so we stopped to use it for outfit shots.

The day was beautiful, the sunlight warm, and the wind was nice.
As soon as we got out the wind swept us up in a loud roar.
We sat patiently and waited for the wind to settle down.
I would quickly fix my hair and we would try taking photos once more.

I think when you scroll through these pictures you will see just how well that went.
Pretty soon, we stopped fighting the wind, and we just worked with it.
We let go of the idea of "perfect" and embraced the chaos of the wind.

My hair was crazy, but my face was smiling.
A true lesson in life..
Don't fight the current, and don't battle the wind.. adjust your sails and fly with it.

Thursday Threads - Summer Days

I'm only a fan of summer when it's winter... and during winter I wish it was summer. But I never wish fall or spring would end! The only thing I love about summer are the belly shirts, flowers and fruits and vegetables are in season!
I really really don't like heat. I've always been sensitive to the it, and I over heat easily or get heat stroke. Being self employed this summer has been awesome, because I get to stay in the house with the swamp cooler all day.. even though the house sometimes gets up to 85 during the day, it's better than sitting in the hot car. I do love to go out in the evenings and explore. The dogs love going on walks and so do I. The river is a favorite location to explore with Sterling, we have yet to take the dogs since they don't like water.

I'm pretty proud to say that my entire outfit was thrifted. The bag cost me 1.50 but with some sewing skills and fabric glue I was able to add all sorts of lace, ribbon fringe and even pom poms. Everything down to the boots and hat are thrifted. Sterling and I are both trying to not buy any brand new clothes. We like the "hunt" for clothes that are out style, and we like being environmentally friendly with buying local. It also makes a huge difference in our spending!
My entire outfit cost about $15.00, which means my money gets to go other places like buying good healthy food! Something I would rather spend money on anyways.

I was also asked to be a part of the Splurge Vs Save  with Credit Card Insider and this outfit is the perfect one to compare. Below is my "style inspiration" for this outfit.. and while everything in this outfit is thrifted, I know the brands where they came from are reasonably cheap, making this quite the save on my part.. even if they were bought in the store!
