One day I just decided to believe in just about everything. It makes the world seem a little bit more magical. Yes, I believe in big foot, aliens and ghosts. I believe in wishes, spells and spirits. I am also a pretty superstitious person. I make wishes at 11:11 and get really excited when I see a head-side up penny. I throw spilled salt over my shoulder, and knock on wood.
Why you ask?
Well.. Why not?
Here are a few of my favorite superstitions.
- An acorn should be carried to bring luck and ensure a long life.
- To predict the sex of a baby: Suspend a wedding band held by a piece of thread or hair over the palm of the pregnant girl. If the ring swings in an oval or circular motion the baby will be a girl. If the ring swings in a straight line the baby will be a boy.
- It's bad luck to put a hat on a bed.
- The sound of bells drives away demons because they're afraid of the loud noise.
- When a bell rings, a new angel has received his wings.
- A loaf of bread should never be turned upside down after a slice has been cut from it.
- Never take a broom along when you move. Throw it out and buy a new one.
- Three butterflies together mean good luck.
- A broken mirror is seven years bad luck.
- Evil spirits can't harm you when you stand inside a circle.
- It's bad luck to pick up a coin if it's tails side up. Good luck comes if it's heads up.
- If an eyelash falls out, put it on the back of the hand, make a wish and throw it over your shoulder. If it flies off the hand the wish will be granted.
- Stabbing your needles though your yarn balls brings bad luck to anyone who wears something made from that yarn. (I never do this!!)
- It is bad luck to walk under a ladder.
- Put salt on the doorstep of a new house and no evil can enter.
- Bad luck will follow the spilling of salt unless a pinch is thrown over the left shoulder into the face of the devil waiting there.
- It's bad luck to open an umbrella inside the house, especially if you put it over your head.
- Knock three times on wood after mentioning good fortune so evil spirits won't ruin it.
- If you tell someone your wish, it won't come true.
- If you catch a falling leaf on the first day of autumn you will not catch a cold all winter.
- If a black cat walks towards you, it brings good fortune, but if it walks away, it takes the good luck with it.
Interesting stuff huh? Last year I broke a mirror, annnnd to avoid the 7 years bad luck, I buried it in the backyard under a full moon. No bad luck here!
I also took in a (mostly) black cat. Even though I don't like cats at all.. but Anubis has been the best cat I've ever had. He's so silly and sweet. But he doesn't want you to know it.
He secretly follows me around the house.. like I'll go into the bedroom and he'll slowly go in, like he forgot something there. Then I'll go into the kitchen and slowly he'll appear looking around the walls like he's casually seeing what's for lunch. If I'm sitting on the couch he will be where he can see me, and just watch. If I get up, he'll slowly come follow but act like it's no big deal and he was planning on going and laying in the hall way while I check my outfits. His walk has straightened out on his own, so we didn't have to take him in for surgery. And he is all better. The luckiest black cat ever.
But, I love Friday the 13th just because of the idea of it. The same reason I love Halloween. I love all things dark, and spooky. That's why my house is always decorated for Halloween, and I own 7 life size human skulls. I'm looking to get my animal skull collection going, if you have anything to add.. let me know!
It's been a bit slow around here, so I've decided to run a Friday 13 sale in my shops!
This weekend only, I'll be offering 13% off,
plus your package will be full of Spooky Surprises.
I'm not going to say exactly what those will be,
but I'm pretty darn excited. You should be too.

I didn't know the one about needles through yarn. Definitely stopping that habit right now. I'll just have to find a new way to keep track of my extra needle when working with DPNs. I feel the same way about belief, though; it makes life a little more fun, interesting, and all around magical.
ReplyDeleteI love superstitions. One of my favorite things about being Southern is all of the superstitions that we still hold on to. Did you know it's bad luck for the first person to cross your threshold after New Years to be a woman? You're also not supposed to do laundry on the first day of the new year lest someone you wash for dies. If your right hand itches you're going to meet someone new, and if your left hand itches you're going to come into some money. AND if someone sweeps under your feet, you'll never get married. There are dozens, and I adore them! I've always loved the South for it's superstitions and mysteries.
ReplyDeleteWellllll... You are my new favorite person! I LOVE the south!! I miss it so bad! I think I wrote the original Superstitions while I lived in Arkansas!
ReplyDeleteI started believing in everything just for fun last summer. It's really fun! And now there's so much I believe in and do, it's like second nature to me now to check the moon before I make some sort of change or something! It's neat that you have the same attitude!
ReplyDeleteFor the record, the wedding ring to tell the sex of a baby is totally true! We have done that in my family for decades and it's never been wrong!
ReplyDeleteI believe it! Have you ever worked with a pendulum? It's kind of the same thing.. Very neat!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! I think a lot more people are stating to believe in this sort of a thing, and I think it's awesome!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that for a while either! Also, no hats on the bed!! I don't know if I mentioned that one.. that's always been a bad habit of mine..
ReplyDeleteI'm a Florida girl, myself. I live in the northern bit of Florida that looks more like Georgia or Alabama. I love it. There are so many cemeteries in the woods here that are so old. I love superstitions and spooky lore. I was recently reading up on the folklore from my area. There's a bridge, Bellamy Bridge, that was supposedly haunted by a ghost bride, but unfortunately the myth had no truth to it. It's a darn shame, but there are plenty of other myths around here. I have an ancestor tied into a Civil War era myth. Supposedly, some soldiers lynched a man, and where his feet swung over the ground it created a hole that won't fill to this day. I keep meaning to take a day trip and see the sight for myself.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! When I was out traveling I started collecting ghost story books from every state I lived in.. Then I would go find the places if I could North Carolina had some of the coolest haunted places!
ReplyDeleteI believe in the power of positive (& negative) thinking. I ALWAYS fly with turquoise & have to touch the outside of the plane. I believe that if you go to bed angry at someone, you should paint their toenails, while they are sleeping. (It's impossible to stay angry...especially if it is a dude. Use something sparkly and hide the remover.)
ReplyDeletePS I also believe that good luck often arrives disguised as bad luck, so ride it out, babies! There is a gift in every pile of crap!
ReplyDeleteLOVE THIS POST! Jen and I started dating on Friday the 13th, and it's been a favorite day (and now a lucky day) of mine since I was a little girl. I find 'tis magickal. 13 is also my favorite number, and Jen and I married on Sept 13th, '07. I believe in... well, nearly everything. Nessie, UFOs, life on other planets, time travel either now or in the future, spirits, and *so much more*. I also believe in faeries, other worlds like the fae realm, etc. I believe in science, and I do believe in some superstitions. There are a few I don't, like the stepping on a crack one and that black cats are unlucky. Jen and I LOVE black cats.
ReplyDeleteI do make wishes when I see 11:11, 12:12, etc. I've never heard of the acorn one! Jen and I never ever leave hats on the bed! I DO THE EYELASH ONE!
Such a fun post!
Friday the 13th is my favorite too! I think that 13 is a lucky number too. :) Sterling and I were talking about how we might as well just believe in everything. It makes the world more magical. I've convinced him that the faery realm is real! :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the painting their toenails.. that is amazing.
