The Hair Post

I've gotten many emails about my hair. How I get it to be so pink, who cuts it, who dyes it. What dye I use, what the back looks like, etc. So, here is a quick little post about my hair!

First off, I cut my own hair!
I've cut my own hair since I was 18. I'm pretty good at it.
I cut it about once a month with a regular pair of scissors, then trim it up with a pair of razor scissors.
I started cutting it myself because I didn't have the money to actually go anywhere, and I ended up liking it so much I just cut it myself.
If YOU are a hair dresser, don't make fun of me, cause it probably won't meet your standards of a good hair cut. (Insert winky face)

I also dye my hair myself!
My hair is all over pink, but the front is hot pink, while the rest is a darker pink. The whole dye process takes a while, but it's worth it to me. I love my pink hair, and I'm very lucky I don't have a job that would keep me from doing this.
First I bleach what I want hot pink, in this case the under layer of my bangs. Then I dye everywhere else red. Then after rinsing and drying all that I put in Manic Panic, Hot Hot Pink.  Then I rinse that out, and I've got pink hair!
Beware. This stuff stains your shower, and sink, and floors. Be very careful. It also stains your hands and nails...
I have to repeat this whole process about once a month.

And here is a quick little 360 of the hair.. which is new to me.. I don't think I've ever seen the back of my head since I started cutting it myself!

Remember, if you are going to dye you hair fun colors.. make sure you get it cleared with your work!
And invest in some good shower cleaner, and a towel that matches your hair color.

  3. I cut my own bangs and loved them! I'm getting kind of bored of them, now, though, because I feel like it limits what I can do with my hair so I'm growing them out. YOU look awesome with such short hair! The back looks perfect as far as I can tell, too! Do you have naturally curly hair, because the back is kinda wavy.

    1. I do have naturally curly hair. When it was long, it looked even more curly. Now not so much, unless I don't do anything with it.

  4. Was your hair brown before you added the red? Did you have to bleach that? I've been wanting to dye my hair a dark purplish-red for a while but I have dark brown hair and my mom won't let me bleach it.

    1. if the end colour you want is darker than your natural hair colour, then bleach isn't needed. if you want it lighter, then you need bleach.
another option is to get a lighter version of what your desired end result is, and dye over your already dark hair, giving it a tint of what you want.
dying hair is kind of like using water colours; if you put a light colour over a darker colour, not much shows through.

    2. My hair was brown before the red, The red lightened it a big like Nicole said. I didn't have to bleach that since I don't want it to be BRIGHT pink. So, like Nicole said, it's just tinted, but since the under part is red, it's more likely to look red then brown.

  5. Hey! Yes, you do a very good job with your hair! Super cute :) I totally get what you were saying in your post.. I've cut my hair as long as I can remember with the occassional professional cut gifted from my Mum as a Mother's Day gift for me. Aside from saving the money, its fun to do too. Sometimes the back can be tricky, but it's worth it. :) Keep up the good work. Lov the creativity.

  8. quick question, you stated in an earlier post that you were going to be using organic products. is that manic panic, hot hot pink organic? and if so where can i get some?

    1. I don't think it's complete organic. I spoke to the people at Sally's Beauty supply, and they said it was vegan and didn't have any harsh chemicals.

    2. manic panic isn't organic (as far as i know), BUT they don't test on animals, and it's actually really healthy to use on your hair. it doesn't cause any damage, as it is conditioner based, and uses no peroxide or ammonia. you can get it at a lot of drug stores in the hair dye aisle, it's in little round containers with a black lid, or you can go to a beauty supply shop.

  10. loooove your hair!!! a couple tips from a former bright haired girl: get some of this http://www.kazemhair.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/baseimage/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/d/y/dyzoff-lotion.jpg it's super cheap, can be bought at probably any beauty supply, and takes colour off your face/hands/sink pretty easily. they also sell it in round pads, but i prefer just dabbing some on a cotton ball and wiping my hair line. also, washing your hair in the coldest water you can stand helps the colour from fading/running all over the place. it's also better for your bleached hair :)

    1. Sweet! Thanks for your advice Nicole! I try to wash my hair in cold water, and only wash it every other day. Today I bought some real nice color stay shampoo.. I'm hoping that will help too!

    2. if you can avoid washing your hair longer, go for it! i used the "no 'poo" method for a while with great results. no shampoo, healthy, non-greasy, non-dry hair, and a lightning fast shower!

  12. Hello! I have short hair too and cut my own bangs regularly. How do you cut the back of your hair? I want to start cutting my own but I don't want the back to turn out awful!

  13. You should post a Rachael's-Hair-Timeline with pictures of your hair from kid-years to current.

    I would love to see.

  14. Thanks for the post about your hair! I love your style and how you cute your hair. I really wish I could do a cut that short but I don't think it would look good on me. :(

  15. I can't believe you do that yourself!! I've been wondering where you found such an awesome hairdresser up here! Have you ever tried ChromaSilk dye? I used it FOREVER when I had purple in my hair/purple hair and loved it.

  16. I cut and dye my own hair too. I want to dye it an unnatural color at some point, but haven't yet. Mostly because I buy the cheapest hair dye possible.
