Starving Artist

I always knew I wanted to be an artist. People would always ask the little Rachael TreeTalker "What do you want to be when you grow up." I would always answer, "An Artist." There was an occasional "An Artist AND a secret agent." or "An Artist AND a vet." No matter what else I was interested in at the time, Artist was always in there.

Sometimes I would get discouraged.. People would tell me, "Artists don't make a lot of money." "Painting is a dying art form." "Find something useful to do, you will make more money."

I remember a conversation in particular..
Rachael will be in Green.
Semi supportive and loving person who is concerned about my overall health and well being will be in Blue.

"Are you sure you want to be an artist?" "Yes, I am sure." "You probably will never be rich and famous from it." "I don't want to be rich and famous, I just want to make art." "You can always do art on the side and find a real career." "I would rather just make art" "You will be poor, how will you afford rent and food?" "I will be a starving artist." "That won't be as fun as it sounds."

Well, guess what?
I have a pretty good time, and I am loving life.
I am not rich and I am not famous.
But I love my "job."
and I don't consider myself poor.

Now that I live in my own little apartment ,with my own little workshop, I have been making a lot of art. I currently have a part time "real job," but when ever I am not there, I am creating in my workshop.

I'm quite proud to be a starving artist.

Here are some of my latest paintings/drawings/collages.
Prints and originals are available here.

So, some people have asked about my "real job." Well, I can't say what it is quite yet.. but I work as lead designer for a company that has not yet launched.
Don't worry, as soon as we have the Grand Opening, you guys will be the first to know.

  1. I think as long as you're happy and surviving, that's all that should matter, and surviving is, I think, subjective anyway.
I always love your work and, darn it, I'm determined to order something someday to put in my living room.

  2. When I knew you it was "An artist and a famous actress." :)

Society places too much emphasis on money and material goods. As long as a person is happy and healthy there's no need for such economic gluttony. Even the poorest Americans are still some of the richest people in the world.

  4. Ditto to what J Gallagher said! Life it not about how much money or things you have. It's about inner peace and real true happiness!

  6. one of my role models said 'just do what makes you happy. then, in fifty years, you'll either be rich and happy, or poor and happy. but you'll be happy.'

  9. It took my Dad a long time to figure out what you already have. He used to tell me "If it were up to me, I'd sit and paint sail boats all day." Congrats on sticking to your guns and doing what you love.

  10. I'm on the same boat. Although I still have my "real job" occupying much of my time rather than art. I'm hoping that'll soon change. :) Goodluck on everything! xx
