Last Moments

My last moments with Mowgli involved:

Taking him out of the hospital for some sunlight.
The coon. (His favorite toy)
A whole pizza all to himself.
He ate the cheese off of half of the pizza.
He also ate about 2 pieces.
There was sauce all over him.
He was a happy happy pup.
If he could wag his tail, it would be going a mile a minute.
Lots and lots of tears.
Lots and lots of kisses.
Lots of snuggling.
Lots of hugs.
Lots of I love you's.
And strangely a few smiles.
I knew this was best for him,
even though it was hard.

I held his little face in my hands as he went, with my forehead pressed against his.. so our third eyes were touching. I told him he was beautiful. I told him I loved him more than he knew. I thanked him for the lessons he has taught me, and the example he has been. I told him how sorry I was that I couldn't keep him with me. I called him my angel, and my sunshine.

And as his eyes closed.. I told him to walk again and go eat some more pizza. Extra cheese.

And now I sit in bed, wearing Brad's hoodie for comfort, missing my snuggle partner..

Yet, I honestly can say.. I feel his spirit with me.

  3. This made me cry... I'm so sorry. He is your little angel and when you lay your head down to sleep he will be on your pillow there to comfort you. Feel free to feel sad... but remember he was there to make you smile so smile for him and let him know that you are doing okay.

  7. Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

  11. Thank you Rachael for posting these pictures and for sharing your last moments with Mowgli with us.
I can't tell you how greatfull I am that you did what was right for Mowgli.
I have seen so many people over the years put their pets through so much, just to keep them alive for their sake, not willing to let go. Only to see the dear little animals suffer and live in pain for the rest of their lives. It has shown me an incredible strength in you and a lot of respect for others.
You will never forget Mowgli, but this pain will go away and you will have nothing but cherished memories. Take as much time as you need to grieve. Keep an eye on your other pets, they will feel the loss as well. When we put our 13 year old pit bull down, our poodle stopped eating, playing, refused to go for walks, and wouldn't get off the couch. My best friend stepped in quickly and brought over a baby kitten, it helped a lot.
    Hugs, xoxoxo

  14. I’m not there with you today but know that I haven’t gone astray.

I am the wind blowing through your hair and the warmth you feel in the air.

When that smile creeps on your face, remember that I am in a good place.
And when you’re feeling sad and down, recall memories of me running around.

You don’t need to look low and high, just search way deep inside.
And know that we’ll never be apart, for I have left my pawprints on your heart.

  16. When I first read your pup was sick a few days ago I kept thinking of you and Mowgli... I'm so so sorry for your major loss. For me it was one of the hardest times I've ever had to go through because as you very well know, they end up being your best friend. It breaks my heart that his life had to be cut so short but you could tell he had a great life with you and I know he is in doggy heaven eating his favorite foods and playing with his favorite toys!

Keep your head high lady and hang in there!

  19. Today is the first time I've stumbled across your blog. I found you via someone else who had posted about Mowgli needing donations. Then I read your latest post and I haven't stopped crying for the past 15 minutes. I know far too well it feels like to have to say goodbye to a beloved pup and my heart absolutely breaks for Mowgli and yourself. Take comfort in knowing that you made the right decision and remember him for the happy pup that he was. I have no doubt that he felt truly loved right up to his last moment. x

  41. Rachael, I just read about you in Artful Blogging and had to check out your site. We just lost our one great dog on July 22 and I've been having a really hard time dealing with this. I posted about him on my blog and I think it was really good therapy for me. We still have another dog and I love them both, but the grieving process really sucks, big time!
